Research and Planning: Fonts

In order to chose a font for the title on my front cover, I have researched different fonts via the website http://www.dafont.com. This website allows people to download all different types of fonts. At first i wasn't sure what type of font i wanted, so i downloaded a range of fonts for me to chose from when i decide on my magazine name. I tried to stay away from the typical dance music magazine fonts as in my opinion they seem 'chavvy', tacky and unoriginal. However, i still wanted the consummer to be able to relate to what type of music genre the magazine is by the font. This is because if the font looked like it belonged to a different music genre, such as rock, the consummer might not think the magazine a serious dance magazine, as it is projecting many different genres.

Feedback 6.12.09

Hannah, you are doing well with this but need to speed up now! You should have completed your reserch and planning by now and be on to production work this week. I need to see a rough draft of your feature article and post your photos on here before you manipulate them. See checklist and me in lessons. You cannot hope to complete this coursework in lessons alone, you must use your own time.

From this top 40 i can see which songs are popular and which genre appears the most. There are not a lot of dance songs in the top 40 however there are many songs which have been remixed which would be classed as dance music. Such as; I gotta feeling - Black-eyed peas, Sexy Chick - David Guetta, etc. Therefore, i can see dance music is popular.

Research and Planning:Music genres and gender pie chart

One of my questions on my questionnaire was 'which type of music do you enjoy?'. I asked this question to find out what type of music is popular. Also if i find out what genre of music is popular, i will be able to find out what genre of music people would buy a music magazine of. Dance music was the most popular answer people chose, this is will work to my advantage as my chosen genre for my magazine is dance music. Therefore, i now know that a lot of people like dance music, it is popular and in demand.

Gender was another one of the questions on my questionnaire. I asked this question as i planned to target my magazine at both gender with a 'girly touch'. I planned to do this as i think there is a gap in the music magazine market for this type of music. Most of the dance/house magazines are mainly male dominated, i would like to produce a magazine targeted at both sexes, with a slight girly touch. I will do this by my colour scheme, fonts, type of language, etc. I also aim to produce a dance magazine without making it 'chavvy' as many people have the perception that dance is 'chavvy', i would like to produce a classy, chic dance music magazine. This would also be a USP.

Research and Planning: Magazine questionnaire

I have created a questionnaire about magazine for my research. I intended for this questionnaire to give me an idea of what the public think and want in a music magazine, also to see who my target audience is. I also wrote this magazine to prove there is a large audience of this genre.

I asked their age group, i asked this to find out what age group are into this genre and what age group i should aim my magazine at.

I also asked, "Do you like going clubbing? If yes, how often do you go?". I asked this as i plan to write a article about clubbing and about drug awareness in clubs. I asked this to see if people who like this type of genre also go clubbing often. I could then see if a clubbing and drug awareness article would be relevant to be readers of this genre of magazine.
