Disco Dirt Evaluation

Check out this SlideShare Presentation:

Audience Feedback.

I wrote ten questionarries about my magazine for my target audience to answer. I did this so I could see how they felt my magazin; if they thought it looked professional, the good points and what could be improved etc.

My feedback was very positive, here is an example of what one member of my target audience thought;

What does the title suggest?

That it's an clubbing/dance music magazine.

What genre of music does the magazine focus on and how do you know this?

house, dance music. I know this from the words used, the colour scheme, the photograph, and because it mentions a lot of artists in this genre.

What makes the pages look professional and what stops them from looking professional?

the photogragh looks very professional, I like the background and how he is standing looks very genuine. Also the whole layout of the magazine looks real. However, the picture on the front page is a little blurry in some parts.
How genuine does the front cover seem?

it looks very genuine due to this titles and subtitles, also the barcode, price and website all add to it looking genuine.

Does the contents page simply inform or does it also manage to interest you in reading the rest of the magazine?

the contents informs me of what the magazine is about by the subtitles. However, it also invites you in because of the pictures and fonts, and the interesting subtitles makes you want to read on.

Does the article sound like a piece of journalism? If not what bits don’t sound right?

Yes it's really good and believeable. The DJ mikey sounds real and its like you get to know him through the interview.

Does the article layout make you want to read it? If not why?

Yes because the layout is easy to follow, its also on a white background and the black write contrast makes it easy to read. The title and the subtext also makes you want to read the interview because it makes this interview sounds like one you cant miss. The photograph is also very intriging.

From my audience feedback I can see my magazine has fulfilled it’s potential, and it suits my target audience. As results from my audience feedback show that 8/10 of my audience felt my magazine was genuine, and interesting.

Finished double page spread!

This is my finished double page spread. I am  happy with this page and I think this was successful.
I have continued with my colour scheme which I think looks really well on this page, it looks simple yet very effective. I have used bold writing and a red front to indicate when the interviewee is asking questions.I have also used a very catching subtitle which makes the audience want to read more. My subtitle makes this interview, sound like one you cannot not read, with sentences such as; "Wow.. we’ve finally managed to track down the untraceable, the unique, upcoming star..". This makes the reader want to read on and find out why Mikey is so untrackable. I have wrote "Interviewed by Hannah Mattison" under my subtitle, this adds authenticity to the magazine making it look more genuine.
My title is simple yet suggestive, 'The real Mikey' it suggests the interview is going to reveal the real side to mikey which they havn't seen before. I have kept the same title front which is called 'CGF locust resistance' for constanty.
I really like my photograph on this double page as it matches with both the title and the whole message Mikey protarys throughout the interview. My model has his arms wide open which suggests he is openning up and really is showing the audience the real him. However, it also makes him look like his not really bothered what people think of him, hes just going to show you the real him and let you make up your own mind, with is excatly the message I have tried to protarty through the whole interview. I have photoshopped this image, I have done this to make the background look dark to make him stand out more.

I asked a lot of questions and had very detailed answers. I feel as though I have created a real believable character and I think the readers get to understand Mikey's personality and know what hes all about just by my interview.

Finished contents page!

This is my completed contents page of my magazine. I am happy with my contents page as I think its informative, eye-catching , and simple.
I have kept to my colour scheme of red, grey/black and white, to keep my magazine constant and so the audience can recognise it is a 'Disco Dirt' magazine. I have also continued to use the same fronts and title for my contents page for the same reasons.

I also really like my photos on my contents page. They both look really 'clubish', therefore the reader would automatically know this is a techno/clubbing magazine. Another factor i like about my contents page is how i space my text with red lines seperating them. Also i spilt my page index into two sections 'features' and 'regulars' this makes the contents page look more organised and professional.

Some factors which i think i could improve my contents pages are I should have filled the page more. The page does look simple and not confusing, however, I think this also makes it look like the magazine isn't very indept and doesn't have alot of articles. If I had more time, I would have also liked to have wrote a editors note. If i was to make another magazine I would take all theses factors into consideration.

Finised front page!

This is my completed cover for my magazine, I am happy with my completed cover. The main factor I like about my front cover is my photograph. To make the background lighter; I had to cut out my model, lighten the background and place the model back on to it, I did this using photoshop. I think the photo looks professional, I also like how my model is standing and his body language as it gives the correct impression of 'Mikey' which i wanted to portary to my audience. I think generally the photo is interesting and looks intriguing which will make the readers want to read the rest of the magazine.
Throughout my magazine I have stuck to a red, black/grey and white colour theme. I did this to keep my magazine simple so it does look to confusing resulting in it having a 'messy', unprofessional look with lots of different colours. I also wanted to keep my magazine constant and wanted my audience to be able to reconise and relate to 'Disco Dirt' with this colour scheme. I have highlighted words such as; Mikey, Free, win and revealed, I did this to catch the reader attention and draw them in.
I also think my front cover is successful as you can clearly see it is an house/techo/dance magazine from this front cover. It is extremely important that the audience can recognise what genre the magazine is from the front cover, so they are aware of what type of genre the magazine is going to be throughout the magazine. My front cover protrays a house/dance music genre for many reasons such as; it says DJ and clubbing, it also mentions Ibiza twice (which people automatically associate with clubbing and dance/techno music). I have also mentioned some famous mucis artists in this genre such as; Chase&Status, Deadmau5, hot chip, and Ellie Goulding. I have also have included a free CD of a new DJ called 'Lee Foss' for every reader, this will attract customers to buy the magazine.

I have used a masthead on my front cover, as I think they are an important way to appeal to customers. I think this because mastheads are clearly invisible in shops as most shops which sell magazines will display them in a magazine rack. Magazine racks only show the top of the magazine, therefore it is important I put a masthead which will draw the audience in. On my masthead I have advertised how the audience can win a clubbing holiday to Ibiza, I have put the word 'win' in bold letters and wrote get more info inside. My target audience are generally people who like clubbing, therefore this would be a holiday most of them would want to win, making them want to buy the magazine to read more about it. I have also used a barcode with the date and price, and included the magazines website at the bottom of the page, this makes the magazine look more realistic and professional.

Draft of inerview!!

Interview
Wow we‘ve actually done it… we’ve finally managed to track down the untraceable, the unique, upcoming star… Oh yes it’s the new king of DJs, Mikey. He’s known for his legendary gigs, wild party ways, and disappearing into thin air with the media not getting a glimpse. The word on the street is he hates any media coverage of him, especially interviews. However, for some unknown reason he agreed to do an exclusive interview with us. I’m a little sacred, but most of all excited to introduce to you, Mikey.

Mikey how are you? I gotta tell you how shocked but excited I am to be interviewing you, you seem to be the most mysterious, untraceable DJ around.
Mate I’m good thanks you? Haha yeah well that’s what I keep hearin like. But its pretty simple really, I don’t like all the media attention. It’s all fake to me, just not what I’m about.. I’m about one thing and that’s my music. I’m sick of reading about fucking kids thinking their a big shot celebrity.

Yeah, don’t worry we’re on your side. We definitely agree to say the least.
Yeah I’m glad someone does man! I hate gossip magazine… but don’t get me wrong I’m not slating all mags. I do love ……….. Because your simply about the music, about the scene. Celebrities today though, yanno what I mean its all about who’s got the most money, whos getting shit faced at some snobby club and who’s bangin who. More and more DJs these days think their the best thing going and should be treated like celebs, when in reality there just cocky little shits who need to be put in their place. I don’t wanna be know as part of that, I want to be know as a DJ.. A music producer, not a cocky little wannabe. But like I said, I appreciate this magazine your not about all that and I am a reader myself.. Plus my managers were giving me grief about not doing any interviews, so doing this should shut ‘em up for abit!

Well it is refreshing to heard a performer in the public eye, not getting caught up in the fame side and staying down to earth. However, I have heard a few stories about you. You do seem to be a party animal, you can’t say you turn down all the free club entrances and booze!
When did I say I did? I said I don’t like being in media light for the wrong reasons, I didn’t say I don’t going out and get wasted with my mates… I’m 23 for god sake. Obviously I’m going to take full advantage of the free booze an club entrances, come’on what kind of a DJ would be, if I didn’t!

You seem to have come out of nowhere and now you’re a ledged growing before our eyes. Must be hard to deal with it all happening so fast.
That’s what it looks likes from an outsiders point of view yeah. It looks like I’ve just got lucky, hit it big and had it all handed to me on a sliver plate… which honestly must piss a lot of aspiring DJs off, as it’s a hard game to make it big in and I know its frustrating. But as reality goes I’ve been DJing and trying to make it, since I was 16. I remember my first gig, I was a scrawny kid pretending to be 18 with a shit load of ambition. It was in some grotty little club on the outskirts of Manchester but I loved it, haha I don’t give one how cliché this sounds but I knew I was built to be a DJ ever since then. So yeah I’ve been DJing for a long time, had a lot of false hope and been let down a lot but here I am. Just wanted to let any aspiring DJs know that, nothing gets handed to you in this world, its up to you if you make it or not.

What’s the worst club you’ve had to work in?
Ah man.. Like I said, the clubs that I worked in back in the day were all pretty nasty. But it doesn’t matter whether you’re a DJ or not, everyone’s gotta have been to one once in their life! Come’on yanno what I mean! The slutty, over weight bar staff, fights kicking off everywhere, the floor covered in sick, pervy old geezers leant against the wall watching on under aged girls. Shit, I’m glad I’ve moved on from them kind of places, but I’ll always remember them ‘cos never know when it might all be taken away from you.

I was at a venue you did at Replay in South London, it was crazy you seem to really connect with the crowd.
Wow Really? What month did you see me in lad?

Um, back in October..?
Oh mate yeah, I remember. That place is sick! I love performing there, has a good vibe so it was easy for me to connect with the people there. The crowd seem to be there for the right reason at Replay, to listen to good music, have a laugh and lose yourself. Like, a lot of places I’ve performed at the crowd are either too stuck up and not loose enough to have a good time or their raving uncontrollably ‘cos their off their faces on some drug that fucks their brain up. Man, people need to find a happy medium!

In this issue we’re actually doing an article about the Ibiza life style and the drug problems related to house and techno music. What’s your take on drugs?
Well I think…drugs are for mugs who just need a hug cos their fucked off that silly bug! Hahaha… no, no, no seriously it is an very important issue which need to be addressed. I’m actually really glad, you’ve got the balls to do it as a lot of magazines in this scene talk about drugs in light heartedly and in a way promote them, and it’s fucked up that they get away with that. I’m glad you’re not doing that or id have to walk out of this interview right now.

Have you ever done drugs?
I’m ashamed to say yes. I had an addiction when I was 18 years stupidly, young. I was made to think that to be a big DJ you had to be on something, I was told it was impossible to keep up otherwise. I’m not gunna try play innocent and say I was pressured into taking drugs, ’cos it was my own choice and I have to live with that now. I can honestly say the worst time of my life was when I was addicted to drugs. I did them because I thought it made me a better DJ, which is laughable now because that’s the biggest bullshit ever. I was so naïve, the people pressuring me who I thought were my friends weren’t trying to help me become a better DJ at all, they just wanted the drug money. Let me just make this clear, drugs do the exact opposite of making you a good DJ.

What about Ibiza... Do you go there a lot?
Yeah I actually go about once every 2 months, sometimes more. I have a villa out there, it’s in old Ibiza though so it’s not a crazy party villa like it sounds. I like to get away from it all occasionally and my villa is the perfect place for me to do that, it’s got beautiful mountains surrounding it so peaceful there… Oh great, bet I sound like a right boring cunt now! Hahaha. I obviously work a lot in Ibiza as well, Ibiza known for its house music. I feel at home there... I would move there but I’m a secret mummy’s boy! I’d miss my family too much and the good old English ways.

What about the ladies? Bet you get a lot of female attraction being a well-known DJ.
Err, no offence mate but this sort of shit is exactly why I hate interviews. Like why would people wanna know that sort of stuff about my personal life. It’s just a major pet hate of mine, I can’t get my head around it. I will give you an answer ‘cos you seem an alright lad, yeah I’ve got a girl... Cheers for asking but that’s all your getting.

Fair enough! Thank you for letting ….. Be the lucky ones who interview you! Seriously TommyJ we appreciate it. And let’s not forget your album, live it now, is released on the 15th march 2010. Just before you go, I’m curious why did you name your album live it now?
Basically means... Live it now! Fuck tomorrow, life’s short, do what you wanna do and do it now. I’m getting a tattoo of the phrase ‘live it now’ tomorrow, now that’s fucking dedication.

And with that, he’s gone... Mikey ladies and gentlemen.

Chosen font!

I wasn't happy with the fonts i chose previously, so i tried to find another font. I found a font named 'CGF locust resistance' which i will use throughout my magazine.
