Research and Planning: Fonts

In order to chose a font for the title on my front cover, I have researched different fonts via the website http://www.dafont.com. This website allows people to download all different types of fonts. At first i wasn't sure what type of font i wanted, so i downloaded a range of fonts for me to chose from when i decide on my magazine name. I tried to stay away from the typical dance music magazine fonts as in my opinion they seem 'chavvy', tacky and unoriginal. However, i still wanted the consummer to be able to relate to what type of music genre the magazine is by the font. This is because if the font looked like it belonged to a different music genre, such as rock, the consummer might not think the magazine a serious dance magazine, as it is projecting many different genres.

Feedback 6.12.09

Hannah, you are doing well with this but need to speed up now! You should have completed your reserch and planning by now and be on to production work this week. I need to see a rough draft of your feature article and post your photos on here before you manipulate them. See checklist and me in lessons. You cannot hope to complete this coursework in lessons alone, you must use your own time.

From this top 40 i can see which songs are popular and which genre appears the most. There are not a lot of dance songs in the top 40 however there are many songs which have been remixed which would be classed as dance music. Such as; I gotta feeling - Black-eyed peas, Sexy Chick - David Guetta, etc. Therefore, i can see dance music is popular.

Research and Planning:Music genres and gender pie chart

One of my questions on my questionnaire was 'which type of music do you enjoy?'. I asked this question to find out what type of music is popular. Also if i find out what genre of music is popular, i will be able to find out what genre of music people would buy a music magazine of. Dance music was the most popular answer people chose, this is will work to my advantage as my chosen genre for my magazine is dance music. Therefore, i now know that a lot of people like dance music, it is popular and in demand.

Gender was another one of the questions on my questionnaire. I asked this question as i planned to target my magazine at both gender with a 'girly touch'. I planned to do this as i think there is a gap in the music magazine market for this type of music. Most of the dance/house magazines are mainly male dominated, i would like to produce a magazine targeted at both sexes, with a slight girly touch. I will do this by my colour scheme, fonts, type of language, etc. I also aim to produce a dance magazine without making it 'chavvy' as many people have the perception that dance is 'chavvy', i would like to produce a classy, chic dance music magazine. This would also be a USP.

Research and Planning: Magazine questionnaire

I have created a questionnaire about magazine for my research. I intended for this questionnaire to give me an idea of what the public think and want in a music magazine, also to see who my target audience is. I also wrote this magazine to prove there is a large audience of this genre.

I asked their age group, i asked this to find out what age group are into this genre and what age group i should aim my magazine at.

I also asked, "Do you like going clubbing? If yes, how often do you go?". I asked this as i plan to write a article about clubbing and about drug awareness in clubs. I asked this to see if people who like this type of genre also go clubbing often. I could then see if a clubbing and drug awareness article would be relevant to be readers of this genre of magazine.

Research and Planning: Preliminary Task

For my preliminary task i have produced the front cover college magazine. The overall idea for my magazine, was to do a college magazine which was 'for students, by students'. I also had the idea of having a student, from St. Mary's college, in the college library. I chose this image of a student reading a disability sports book because the main article in my magazine is about new disability sports course and equipment. In this image the students looks happy and smiling, this portrays a good impression of the college as they look like they are enjoying college.

I chose to use the colours blue and yellow for the font as these colours match the college logo, which i have included on the front page. I also used red for the text i wanted to stand out.

As this task was my preliminary task there are many mistakes and improves which need to be made. One improve is the picture, the colours are very dull and there is a lot of browns which may give a perception the magazine will be boring, and not exciting, interesting and young, which was in my plan.

I have attached my contents page. I wanted to keep my contents page interesting and for the titles to be short and catchy. I also made sure i added pictures on my content page as i wanted to kept it interesting.

Research and Planning: Thoughts and ideas for my chosen project.

My project choice for my AS Media coursework, is a music magazine. I chose to the print option because i buy magazines a regularly, i also love listening to music and know a lot about the different genres in music.

The genre for music magazine is clubbing and dance music, which includes music genres such as; house, trance, electro, etc. I chose this genre as i enjoy listening to this genre. I also think it would be interesting and different to produce a magazine on this genre of music.

My target audience is generally going to be 16-25 year olds, as this genre and magazine is going to be targeted at people who enjoy clubbing, going out and house parties.

The USP of my magazine is the actual genre, this is because there isn't many well known electro/dance music magazines. I also plan be very anti-drugs throughout my magazine, and maybe have a drug awareness article. This is also a USP for my magazine, as the clubbing sence has a lot drug problems and the people who like enjoy type of music genre and buy this magazine, are extremely likely to go clubbing. Many dance magazines portray a laid back attitude to drugs, however my magazine will be anti drugs which will make the magazine unique.

Similar products include; Mixmag, Dj Mag and slices. These magazine are all similar to the style of magazine i want to produce.

The research i intend to carry out before i start to produce my project includes; an audience questionnaire, an analyses of a magazine similar to the genre i want to produce and i will outline the expected conventions and evaluate their success in targeting their audience, i will also research similar products.
